Where to look for a new job

Whether you have decided that it is time to move on from your current company, or you are seeking your first position or part-time employment as you study, it’s important to spread your search as wide as possible.

Here are some of the most popular ways to find a job.

The Internet

The internet has transformed the way people look for jobs, making our searches quicker and easier. On top of employers’ own websites, there are also job boards which show thousands of positions. Many of these allow you to upload your CV and ‘instant apply’ for jobs. Try not to fall into that trap, and remember to tailor every application you complete to the position you are applying for.

Go Offline

You can increase your chances of success by using a variety of job-hunting methods. Newspapers (both local and national) and professional or specialist journals provide a huge platform for companies. Not only can they advertise jobs, but they can also promote their own success. Remember, an expanding company may not be currently advertising, but they might in the future.

Networking

A recent statistic from the National Careers Service suggests that only 40% of jobs are advertised. Being able to network effectively enables you to get inside information on jobs and careers, as well as build up contacts who may be able to help you find work. Applying for jobs that aren’t being advertised also cuts down on your competition, so if you’re not already, make sure you are networking both in person and online. Check out industry conferences, events and forums, visit job fairs, join online networking sites such as LinkedIn and do the same.

Recruitment Agencies

Recruitment agencies such as Meridian Business Support can take the hard work out of your job search. A reputable agency will build close relationships with both client and candidate alike, enabling them to match not only your skills and experience to a position, but also your personality to a company in which you will fit. They can also help match your skills to positions you may not have previously considered. For more information on how Meridian can help you with your job search, contact your local branch.
