What Is a Disability Assessor?

A disability assessor is a caring and compassionate medical professional who is able to impartially and thoroughly assess the personal situations of those with a physical and/or mental health disability to see if they qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

As an Assessor, you will utilize your clinical knowledge and broad-based medical experience by carrying out face to face assessments and examinations in a holistic manner. Such assessments focus on how a person's health condition(s) may have an impact on day-to-day life. The role will require you to use IT systems and software to write clear and concise medical reports which will later be used for decision making purposes.

What is PIP?

PIP is a benefit for people aged 16 to 64 with long-term health conditions. It helps people with a wide variety of disabilities cover the extra costs that they may face when trying to lead a fully active and independent life.

The Job Description:

To analyze and interpret clinical information and medical evidence writing a concise report to a professional standard. This report is then used as the basis for DWP to make decisions on whether a person does or does not get PIP.

To work to productivity and quality targets and standards agreed between Independent Assessment Services and the DWP, proactively seeking and responding positively to feedback received.

Liaise with national medical/health authorities as necessary e.g. GPs, CPNs, Specialist Nurses, Social Care teams. Undertake any ad hoc responsibilities related to service delivery or performance management, as requested by the Service Delivery Team Manager, Clinical Manager or Clinical Support Lead.

To carry out home consultations within the community or from an assessment center to produce a report giving advice to the Department. This will involve traveling to various parts of the UK as business needs require.
